Stefan Rusu (Moldavia)

The Frunze Project, 2003-2005 installation (Central Station)
Mr. Frunza is a Russian revolutionary from Transnistria, (historically the Romanian region of Bessarabia), which is the birthplace of the idea to annexe Moldavia to the USSR. Frunza (which means “tree leaf”) provides the basis from which to retrace both the recent and distant past of the country from its civil wars, to the fall of the Eastern Block, to the Balkan wars. Through the Green Brotherhood Movement, the artist founds a pacifist movement to safeguard the green areas in the East of Moldavia, following in the footsteps of Frunza himself. This is a new approach to the territory, one driving out the winds of war and ushering in those of peace.
