The first event is held at the Gardens of Campus Bovisa, Politenico University of Milan. Saturday 20th of May will be ‘A day for bees’, with botanical workshops on the knowledge of vegetable species useful to pollinators. Bees are crucial in urban centers because they conserve biodiversity. Creating oases with melliferous flowers helps preserve an healthy and vital environment.

On the occasion of World Bees and Biodiversity Week, our Green Island program is active nationwide with a series of events dedicated to pollinators, to raise people awareness on these special insects to be known and protected. The program includes stories of bees, flowers, community, sharing, art and creativity.

In addition, a special project of this edition of Green Island is the creation of Talk&Walk, afternoon moments for citizens. Every afternoon at 5:30 p.m. at the Garibaldi Train Station main hall, it is possible to participate to events, talks and performances, on art, beauty and sustainability, curated by Claudia Zanfi.  Followed by guided tours of creative labs around the Isola neighborhood, curated by IULM  University students.

KIOSK is a pop-up, mobile and multi-purpose kiosk-floristry-kitchen around which a series of activities for the public revolve. A place of exchange and meeting for events and readings, new recipes, music for aromatics, olfactory performances. Created by Zurich based designer Antonio Scarponi, the installation will later be utilized by Schools of Art and Design, where it will serve as a sharing project for young people and students.

Art & Nature, are the main topics of the 21° edition of the international program ‘GREEN ISLAND’, during Milano Design Week. A path dedicated to creativity, art, botany, eco-design, at the Isola District area. KIOSK is a visual-sensory experience, an original urban green installation for Garibaldi Train Station, Milan, curated by Claudia Zanfi /Atelier del Paesaggio. 

Opening on Monday, April 17 at 12.00

A special project by Green Island is the creation of BEES NEST, a series of small hives for solitary bees (osmies), conceived in collaboration with the innovative design studio CARACOL. Totally ecological, the material used, with 3D printing, is derived from the transformation of natural sugars (beets, corn, sugar cane). The first beehives will be installed at the Urban Community Gardens 'COLTIVANDO', Campus Bovisa, Politecnico University Milano. The event will be in collaboration with the campus students and the local community.

For 2023 ALVEARI URBANI/URBAN BEEHIVES is organizing the 9th edition of its Introductory Urban Beekeeping Workshop. A creative series of lecture and meetings dedicated to the beautiful world of bees, botany for pollinators and the relationship between bees and art. The new course is open to all citizens, students, women, with special attention to people with frailty.

SWARM is the first international collective of women for the preservation of bees and biodiversity in all its forms. This collective includes beekeepers, journalists, botanists, university professors, designers, artists, and writers. It stands as an observatory capable of activating research, events, exhibitions, to stimulate a more sustainable development of territories. Bees for an active citizen participation, to spread cultural and ecological messages, useful for future generations.
