Calin Dan (Romania)

Monuments & Ruins, 2005, installation (Railway Underpass)
The artist thought up this project for Going Public with his own arrival in Holland (the West!) in mind, and his initial curiosity about supermarkets, the quantity of goods (unthinkable in the East) and the groupings of products by type and colour. He realises that many of the labels bear the names of famous people and politicians. He then starts to elaborate images from his own collection of labels, and – like the outlines of architectural ruins by Piranesi- the background of each image is provided by the shadow of the “pigeon”, the urban invader and symbol of decadence. The result is a series of large-scale posters to be placed in public spaces around the city.
