In this “adventure called Europe” there is another possibility: that of staying together, bound by the web of mutual, “lateral” responsabilities, founded and manifested in continuous dialog (lacking or reduntant in atomist “liberalism”), and not in an oppressive and binding consensus (the poison of “illiberal community spirit”) – a dialog which aims, not at unanimity but at reciprocal comprehension and acceptance, not at tolerance but solidarity, not at identity but at the reciprocal benefits of our differences.

A Nation is often a State, but the opposite is not always true. What distinguishes the two concepts today? How are the European States made up, how are they structured socially, culturally and economically? How are they identified? What are their common symbols? These are just a few of the questions we asked as we began to deal with the fourth edition of the public and shared art project, Going Public’05.

by Slawomir Sierakowski

First of all let me change the order of the questions and this change will reflect an important part of my thinking:

5) The world is important, but local is more: do you agree wiht this statment?

1) The structure of Contemporary Europe is very diversified: how can we understand better this newly enlarged map?

We still live in a novel from the lost worlds’ category. We still have crowds of cultural tourists who push one another to see these grandiose monstrosities of a secret and tyrannical past. A guided walk through House of the People in Bucharest mimics the round trip through the lost in jungle territories of Maya. It is that perfect combination of faded splendours, decadence
and cruel ceremonies.
